It is set in Europe during World War II as we follow the fortunes of Jewish teen Rosa from her home to the concentration camps. She is separated from all her family except for her cousin. The will to survive is stronger together than apart.
Conditions are inhumane and the guards sadistically cruel. One officer is a strange mixture of beast, yet caring at times providing extra food.
Rosa’s strength of character to survive is admirable. She finds reasons to cling to life.
A name change signifies a change in circumstances. The old life gone and a new life beckons.
